In 2019, offshore wind parks generate a total capacity of 1 GW. In 2023 this will increase to a minimum of 4.5 GW and will then provide 3.3% of all energy in the Netherlands. The locations for these offshore wind parks are situated along the North Sea coast, where circumstances are beneficial for commercialising offshore wind technology on a large scale.

Home to offshore giants covering the entire maritime supply chain, the sector is ideally positioned to overcome the challenges of the offshore wind roll-out, and can deliver new technologies at a large scale. This will lead to a significant reduction in the total cost of sustainable electricity as well as reducing our carbon footprint.
All aspects of offshore wind power production and distribution are concentrated around the Maasvlakte II in the Rotterdam Port area. This area includes space for manufacturing, assembly, construction, maintenance and storage, first-class port facilities and training and education facilities. A selection of technology being developed, validated and demonstrated is displayed to the right.
The test and demo facilities at Maasvlakte 2 are available for short and long-term tests by any company, from startup to multinational corporations. Support is available for things such as licensing and utilities. The Port of Rotterdam also offers an extensive network of offshore-related companies.
The offshore wind industry in our region builds upon centuries of expertise in our maritime and offshore industry. In order to foster innovation within the industry, our region is supporting startups with new innovative ideas by providing the necessary facilities and business growth support.
BOSteRDAM Cleantech Link is a Market Expansion Program for cleantech entrepreneurs and companies from the United States and the Netherlands. InnovationQuarter and Greentown Labs offer a 2-week programme to facilitate a soft landing for Dutch entrepreneurs with an interest in the Greater Boston Area, and for entrepreneurs from the US with the ambition to do business in the Netherlands.
